The Llar (Senior Citizens Home) of Calvià has organised a composting course in collaboration with Calvià 2000 and Fundació Deixalles. The workshop, which was conducted by Amics de la Terra, took place on 24th September and was aimed at users of urban gardens managed by the Llar of Calvià. The course was designed to help users of urban gardens to generate organic fertiliser from the vegetable debris they generate.
The workshop explained what is composting, how to make it and what results can be expected. Composting is the best way to reduce household waste, and is compatible with the selective collection of organic matter for those who have a garden and want to produce their own compost as a fertiliser.
The course was also attended by students of the IFOC of the Puig des Senyor Youth Guarantee Programme, a programme aimed at under 30-year-old unemployed youths, managed by Calvià Town Hall with the participation of the SOIB and cofinanced by the Public State Employment Service (SEPE) and the European Social Fund. In this project, the training of professional certificates (Ancillary activities on plant nurseries, gardens and garden centres, and Ancillary activities on forest conservation and improvement) are developed.
