For the 3^rd year running, Calvia Town Halls Institute of Education & Libraries Dept. (IMEB) has been given the go ahead for the payment of grants for text books for school children who are residents of this municipality.

To date, the Town Hall has granted payment of 677.530€ to some 4.895 students.

This amount will increase after the 2^nd phase which is planned for those people who did not meet the 1^st deadline.

It has been distributed as follows:-

1. 35€ for 1^st year infants ; 65e for 2^nd & 3^rd year infants. (3 to 6 year olds)

2. 110€ for 1^st & 2^nd year primary ; 130€ for 3^rd & 4^th year primary ; 150 for 5^th & 6^th year primary. (6 to 12 year olds)

3. 200€ for 1^st & 2^nd year secondary ; 225€ for 3^rd & 4^th year secondary. (12 to 16 year olds)

As in previous years, this initiative is to benefit school children between the ages of 3 to 16 years. Parents could present their applications during the month of June, this year, however a 2^nd phase has been introduced and the application period is open until 30^th September, 2008.

In the past 2 to 3 years Calvia has lead this initiative before any other municipality of the Balearic Islands. Last year, the money was paid during the month of August, therefore parents had the money before actually having to buy the books.

As a further initiative, the Balearic Governments Ministry of Education has started a campaign to recycle text books. The intention is to reduce cost for certain age groups, and thus highlighting education as a key element of this society.
