In a forthcoming Plenary session the Mayor will announce his intention to propose to the Government, a modification in the General Tourism Law. Additionally he will request the same investment for Calvià as Palma has received
The Mayor of Calvià, Carlos Delgado, will announce at a plenary session on the 16th December, his proposals to various administrative entities for the actions needed to counteract the crisis currently suffered by the tourism sector, which is the main driver of the local economy.
The Government team has already put several measures in place to counteract the negative effects of the situation. The budget for promotion of tourism has been increased and the general Urban plan of Calvià is being revised with the aim of introducing some solutions to the problems, also by way of introducing a tender for ideas as to the arquitectural solutions for the upgrading of resort areas. In order to fulfill these objectives, the tools and the go ahead are within the remit of other Government departments whose cooperation is fundamental.
First and foremost the Municipal PP.team request that the Balearic Government ask that the Secretary of state for tourism should include Calvià in the national tourism plan for Spain, as was the impetus for the upgrading of the Playa de Palma area and the beaches in Gran Canaria South and the Costa del Sol. Calvià is the largest tourist municipality in the Balearic islands and has more hotel beds , more beaches and more coastline than Playa de Palma.
Secondly the proposal requests of the state the creation of a panel of experts whose role will be to execute the improvements included in the plan, specifically in the tourist resorts.
The Secretary of state will be asked to sign an agreement of economic support, similar to that which was signed for the Playa de Palma area and in proportion to the number of hotel beds in Calvià. The Balearic Government is being asked to bring in the neccesary measures in inner city and tourism laws in order to guarantee security for all of the sectors involved, as well as fulfilling objectives for maximizing tourism, in areas such as flexible inventory in hotels etc.
Finally the proposal will be taken to a plenary session and posed to both the Balearic Government and the Consell de Mallorca so as they can support the important projects planned within Calvià, such as a theme park, sports centre, artificial coral reef, all of which will without doubt improve tourism, not just in Calvià but in the Balearic community.
