Calvià Town Hall has paid tribute to Dr. José Ignacio Ramírez Manent, coordinator of the Santa Ponça Health Centre. Mayor Juan Antonio Amengual, members of the Government team and the opposition received the Dr. on Thursday to present him with a commemorative sculpture by the Calvià artist Carlos Terroba. In the same way, the relevant administrative procedures are initiated to award him the Medal of Merit of the municipality for his extraordinary professional and human work in the field of family medicine. This recognition is added to the prestigious 2024 General and Family Medicine Award received a few weeks ago from the Royal National Academy of Medicine (RANME), an award that highlights his outstanding career.
With 42 years of professional experience, of which more than three decades in Calvià, Dr. Ramírez is recognised for his excellence in healthcare and his firm defence of Primary Care and the close link between health professionals and patients. Graduated in Medicine from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, he holds specialties in Family and Community Medicine, as well as in Physical Education and Sports Medicine. In addition, he has a Doctorate in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and carries out important teaching work as a professor at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) and the CESAG in Comillas.
Ramírez has expressed that the RANME award is "both a recognition for me and for the specialty of Family Medicine." «I have been in Calvià for about 30 years, I came to open the Santa Ponça centre, I saw that there was a great need for socio-health issues, that a lot of work could be done and generate great benefit for society. And that is what I have tried all this time, in addition to training other family doctors».
Amengual has pointed out and celebrated that «we recognise and value the work of a professional who, like Dr. José Ignacio Ramírez, has contributed to the well-being of the Calvià residents for more than 30 years. We are very lucky to have the best doctor in Spain in our municipality. He has made the Santa Ponça PAC a national and international benchmark».
Dr. Ramírez has also made a notable contribution to the field of medical research, with more than 120 articles published in international scientific journals and ten chapters in specialised books. He is a senior researcher at the Balearic Islands Health Research Institute (IdISBa) in Epidemiology and Health Education. In addition, he has received numerous awards from scientific entities such as the Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine and the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Balearic Islands.
