SA MORISCA ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENT DAY AND MUSEUM WEEK

Several free activities invite visitors to learn, enjoy and become aware of the importance of the environment, promoting contact with nature and museums

Coinciding with International Environment Day (5th June) and Museum Week (from 3rd to 9th June), Sa Morisca Park Archaeological Museum has organised a set of activities aimed at exploring and reflecting on the environment. These free activities aim to promote direct interaction with nature and museum spaces. These actions aim to enrich knowledge about our natural environment and promote an attitude of respect and protection towards the environment. It should be taken into account that the incorporation of sustainability in museums is recent; the number of museums that integrate it into their museographic discourse is still small. This contrasts with the significant role that museums can play as an environmental communication platform, capable of informing and raising public awareness.

This Tuesday, 4th June, at 6:30 p.m., there will be a guided route under the title "The birds of sa Morisca." The specialists, Mika Palmer and Jordi Muntaner from the Grup local SEO-Virot (SEO/Birdlife), will discover the richness and variety of birds that inhabit sa Morisca forest. This activity is designed for young people and adults and is free of charge with prior registration.

On Thursday, 6th June, at 6:30 p.m., a colloquium will be held under  the title "How to take care of our forests? Past, present and future of forest management." The colloquium will feature the participation of Luis Berbiela, forestry engineer, and Llorenç Picornell, archaeologist, who will offer a historical and current perspective on forest management.

On Saturday, 8th June, at 11 a.m., there is the children's workshop "A stroll through nature." The workshop is designed for girls and boys from 2 to 6 years old, and offers a safe and stimulating play space to discover the environment. On the same day and at the same time, there will be a guided route under the title "The landscapes of prehistory" to discover what the landscape of Mallorca was like in prehistory, led by Biel Servera, an archaeologist specialising in ancient landscapes.

The mission of Puig de sa Morisca Archaeological Park (Sta. Ponça, Calvià) is to investigate, preserve and disseminate the connections between cultures throughout history with the aim of transferring our rich heritage legacy to 21st century society. The park covers an area of 45 hectares of forest and Mediterranean countryside, and manages a heritage made up of 16 archaeological sites and 21 ethnographic elements.

Museums in general, and in particular the Sa Morisca Archaeological Park, are a typology of cultural service that, according to UNESCO (1960), is defined as "a permanent establishment managed in the general interest with the aim of preserving, studying, highlighting through various means and, essentially, expose to the public for their enjoyment and education, a set of elements of cultural value: collections of objects of artistic, historical, scientific and technical interest, as well as botanical and zoological gardens, and aquariums." Therefore, Sa Morisca and its privileged natural environment are a cause for celebration, especially Museum Week.
