CALVIÀ PREPARES FOR THE KING EN JAUME FESTIVITIES

WITH THE INSTITUTIONAL EVENT AT THE SANTA PONÇA CROSS AND CULTURAL AND SPORTS ACTIVITIES

Programme

Calvià will celebrate the king En Jaume Festivities, which commemorate every year the Jaume I troops' landing in Santa Ponça, 795 years ago. The king En Jaume Festivities are for Calvià a sign of identity and tradition that reinforces the social cohesion of the municipality. The institutional event at the landing Cross will be held on Thursday 29th August, with the speech of the mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, and the performance of the Moors and Christians groups, souls of the party. Other activities that will take place are the Calvià giants gathering, the presentation of banners, the medieval market, the Saracen parade, the landing and battle of the Moorish and Christian troops, or the solemn mass.

King En Jaume festivities 2024 programme

The bulk of the traditional and already consolidated programme, will take place from 28th August to 8th September in Santa Ponça, in commemoration of the 795th anniversary of the king En Jaume's landing. The exhibition of the selected painting and photography works of the king En Jaume 2024 awards, although the awards ceremony will not take place until 25th October, will be inaugurated on Wednesday 28th in Calvià Town Hall's exhibition hall.

As for the traditional events, the participation of about 1.400 people from the 11 Moorish and 11 Christian groups is expected. The historical recreation aspects are advised by Bernat Carrot, a microbiologist passionate about the Middle Ages who helps in the designs of the costumes, swords, shields... To faithfully reproduce the history and the battle between Moors and Christians, he relies on the Llibre dels Feits and bibliography on medieval history, thus ensuring a recreation as authentic as possible.
