THE SPECIAL REGIME FOR COLLECTING PASSENGERS IN TAXIS BETWEEN PALMA AND CALVIÀ WILL NOT BE APPLIED DURING THE NIGHT
The decision was taken after detecting that numerous taxis from Palma were operating in Calvià during the night, leaving the Balearic Islands capital without service
The Calvià Town Hall and the Palma Town Hall have agreed to suspend the application of the special regime for collecting passengers by taxi between both municipalities during the night hours between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. This measure responds to the observation by some taxi drivers that there were taxi drivers from Palma who were travelling empty to Calvià to provide services during the night, which resulted in a significant decrease in the availability of taxis in the Balearic Islands capital.
The agreement, which was initially signed on 29th July and came into force on 1st August, was designed to facilitate the joint provision of the passenger pick-up service between Palma and Calvià. However, the application at night has generated problems that have affected the correct provision of the service in Palma.
In statements to Ràdio Calvià, the mayor of the municipality, Juan Antonio Amengual, has stressed that the problems have only been generated "with a few taxis". However, says Amengual, "the objective with which the agreement was proposed is yielding results amongst residents and tourists." In this sense, the mayor highlights that the "great beneficiary is the client", both residents and tourists, who have seen how waiting times have been reduced.
In order to ensure the fluidity of traffic and adequate coverage of taxi services in both towns, it has been decided that this special regime will not be in force during the night. The rest of the clauses of the agreement will remain unchanged and will continue to apply during the rest of the daytime hours.
