The door-to-door selective collection in Calvià Village and Es Capdellà begins its public information phase

The president of Calvià 2000 informs the neighbours of a "progressively, detecting and solving possible problems and giving advice house by house" implementation

Calvià Town Hall has begun to inform the residents of Es Capdellà and Calvià Village of the next implementation of the door-to-door selective collection of waste, with the two meetings of the president of Calvià 2000, Andreu Serra, held with the neighbours of these areas.

Subsequently, the contracting of an information service will be used to advise the inhabitants of these areas on the methodology of this collection, through home visits and other communication formulas that are decided. The objective is to achieve the maximum collaboration of the residents, to know firsthand what their doubts are and to advise them on the best way to carry out the separation at source.

In these meetings, Serra, accompanied by the director of the Environmental Maintenance Department of Calvià 2000, Pedro García, explained that, amongst other reasons, the door-to-door system will increase the percentage of selective collection and consequently improve the impact on the environment. Thus, the municipality will be approaching the target of 50% of selective collection, imposed by the European and state administration for the year 2020.

At present, the selective collection in Calvià is 24%, according to data of the month of June. In this regard, Pedro García said that the only way to increase this percentage is to separate the organic fraction amongst the residents, since hotels have been collecting for decades, in addition to home collection of pruning waste.

Five fractions

"The implementation of the system will be progressive detecting and solving possible problems and giving advice house by house," stressed Andreu Serra, for whom it is fundamental that the process of adaptation to the new collection processes is done ensuring the satisfaction and collaboration of all residents.

With the organic, five fractions will be collected in the municipality, and will add to the current four: paper, glass, containers and rejection. The door-to-door system implies that a different day is dedicated for each fraction, although the organic one, for reasons of hygiene and odors, will be collected three days a week. In addition, it is foreseen an "emergency point" with surveillance and a special reinforcement to throw diapers.

As for the cost of implementation, the door-to-door system does not represent a significant increase over the containers current one, and will allow to remove 60 rejection points from the public way and 7 selective points in Calvià, Es Capdellà and Son Font.
