ACT OF RECOGNITION TO 156 ATHLETES FROM THE 'BED' PLAN OF CALVIÀ

• More than 50% of the BED Plan subsidies have gone to women athletes

• Athletics, Olympic Wrestling, Paddle Surfing and Swimming are the most subsidised sports disciplines

Calvià Town Hall held, this afternoon, a recognition event for Calvià athletes who have been awarded a subsidy for the line intended for individual athletes, for the merits achieved in their respective disciplines during 2022, within the framework of the BED Plan.

The mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, together with the deputy mayor for Sports, Eva Serra, and the councillor for Son Ferrer, Alfonso Molina, handed out the diplomas to the athletes who have received the subsidy.

The mayor, after congratulating them, has assured that "I have also experienced the illusion of practicing sports and I have known up close, more than success, effort, dedication, which is what we really recognize today in this act". Rodriguez Badal has highlighted the values implicit in Sport, stating that "From the Town Hall our obsession is to improve our sports facilities, but our vocation is also to accompany the sports clubs that channel the athletes' effort, and grant scholarships for the effort that are you making. It is important, he added, the internal growth that sport brings us but also the growth that it offers us as a municipality. Sport, he has concluded, is a tool for mass education, as today's motto says. I hope that you continue to enjoy the sport that you are passionate about and that you recognize, both in your family and in those who accompany you, that the effort makes you able to enjoy your passion”.

In total, 156 athletes have received the subsidy through two lines. A first line is intended to help athletes who are in the process of training and who stand out in the field of sport they practice, mostly U18 athletes. The second aid line is intended for athletes over the age of 18 who already have an outstanding carreer, and who have been receiving grants in other editions, they are Olympic athletes or who compete to be the best at the state, European or world level of their respective sports in senior age. These help lines are accessed by athletes such as the triathlete Mario Mola, the swimmer Melani Costa, the athletes Joan Munar and Dani Castilla, or the karateka Noelia Grau.

In addition, in this 2022 call, a third line has been incorporated to help technical personnel in their training or to cover the expenses arised by obtaining the title or teaching the corresponding sports subjects. In the 2022 call, a total of 58,000 euros were allocated for the three help lines.

Of the 156 grants awarded by the municipal BED Plan in the 2022 call, 53% have corresponded to women athletes, and more than 90% are equivalent to individual sports practices.

The disciplines that have been subsidised to individual athletes are: Athletics (40), Olympic Wrestling (18), Stand Up Paddle (13) and Swimming (11). Sports such as Trampoline Gymnastics (9), Karate (8), Sports Dance (7), Futsal (6), Triathlon (6), Sailing (5) or Pentathlon (5) also stand out. Other sports specialties are Tennis, Field Hockey, Artistic Swimming, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Artistic Gymnastics, Canoeing, Horse Riding, Equestrian Vaulting, Football, Cycling, Water Polo, Badminton, Chess, Archery, Kendo and Mountain Racing.
