Support for women in prostitution

Tuesday 6th October 2020

CALVIÀ TOWN HALL SIGNS AGREEMENTS WITH THREE SOCIAL ENTITIES TO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF INTERVENTION AND CARE PROJECTS FOR WOMEN IN PROSTITUTION AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING

The agreements have been signed with the entities Casal Petit - Germanes Oblatas, Metges del Món and Creu Roja

Calvià Town Hall has signed an agreement with three social entities that provide direct care to women in prostitution. These entities are: Casal Petit - Germanes Oblatas, Metges del Món, and Creu Roja.

The confinement before the summer made visible unsustainable situations of vulnerability for sexually exploited women, since many were thrown out of the premises and apartments where they lived for refusing to have contact with men for fear of catching Covid-19, or not be able to pay the rent. The entities Casal Petit - Germanes Oblatas, Metges del Món and Creu Roja assisted the women by providing them resources to cover their basic needs.

The purpose of the agreements is the collaboration of Calvià Town Hall with the three entities by awarding a grant of eight thousand euros each to support and cover the expenses of the intervention and care projects that they carry out for women in prostitution and human trafficking for sexual exploitation purposes and guarantee prevention, protection and care against all forms of violence against women.

The agreements have been signed by the mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, with the director of Casal petit - Germanes Oblatas, María Felicidad Martínez Morán, the president of the Autonomous Committee of Creu Roja Espanyola a les Illes Balears, Antonio Barceló Veny, and the President of Metges del Món del Mundo Islas Baleares, Francisco Peña Gayà.

Casal Petit - Germanes Oblatas is a day care centre for women that belongs to the Germanes Oblatas Congregation. It offers a service of attention to women in prostitution and/or social exclusion, so it works to improve their life quality and increase their social participation. The task of Casal Petit - Germanes Oblatas focuses on socio-educational care, and social, psychological and labour care for women in prostitution contexts and in situations of human trafficking for sexual exploitation. It also coordinates the reception of human trafficking victims in the "Lausana" apartment in coordination with the state security forces.

Creu Roja is a humanitarian institution of a voluntary nature and of public interest. It offers guidance, care and advice to women in prostitution, working with aspects related to the detection of health and social risks. It works specifically with methodologies focused on the first contact with people in prostitution, their connection and referral to services and programmes.

Metges del Món carries out projects to detect situations of risk and exploitation and to promote health in women in prostitution or human trafficking victims. It specialises in health care and basic hygiene, with specialised resources that allow accessibility to the network of health services and public services. It carries out bio-psycho-social assessments and works on the early detection of sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies.
