CALVIÀ PROMOTES INCLUSIVE SCHOOLYARDS IN THE ELEVEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS OF THE MUNICIPALITY

The project, subsidised by the IMEB, tries to convert leisure spaces into open, recreational and sports places for all students

The CEIP Ses Quarterades, in Calvià village, has opened its own inclusive playground this year, with which it seeks to open the students' recreational space to all types of disciplines. This is the last educational centre in the municipality to join an initiative that has financial support from the Municipal Institute of Education and Libraries. Thus, students studying in the municipality's pre-education and primary education schools have adequate and safe playgrounds for practicing multiple specialties (bicycle, skates and scooters), adapting to all ages and educational levels.

In the case of Ses Quarterades, the park is built with an earthen base and a thin layer of asphalt that forms slopes, along with a drainage pipe that prevents the accumulation of water. In the playground there are obstacles and curved slopes, covered with slurry-type non-slip paving, to improve the durability and safety of the circuit. The patio also has road markings and an informational panel.

With this initiative, facilities are improved for practicing activities related to psychomotor skills, cycling and skating. In addition, it seeks to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle, promote civic and ethical values, and contribute to sustainable development by promoting the bicycle as a means of urban transportation.

The objectives of the project include revitalising the school playground, creating an innovative space that combines leisure with sports, offering learning opportunities and development of motor skills, and promoting values such as effort and perseverance. Also, to improve the playgrounds, each school centre undertakes to acquire fixed play material, such as a climbing wall, spotlights, or picnic tables and benches. Likewise, non-fixed material must be purchased, such as networks or music equipment.

This inclusive proposal is made in accordance with a collaboration agreement signed between Calvià Town Hall, the Municipal Institute of Education and Libraries (IMEB) and the Regional Ministry of Education. The three institutions ensure the updating of the recreational areas of the educational centres, so that they have materials and elements adapted to all students and facilitate carrying out inclusive activities, in order to promote equality, the prevention of racism, homophobia or discrimination on the basis of ability. In this sense, 22.500€ are invested in each of the eleven public schools in the municipality: Son Ferrer, Xaloc, Puig de Sa Morisca, Son Caliu, Bendinat, Cas Saboners, Jaume I, Puig de Sa Ginesta, Galatzó, Ses Quarterades and Ses Rotes Velles.

In conclusion, the project seeks to provide a safe and fun space for the practice of sports and psychomotor activities, which promotes an active and healthy lifestyle amongst primary school students in all public schools in Calvià.
