Calvią will celebrate Saint George

Thursday, 9th November 2023

CALVIÀ WILL CELEBRATE SAINT GEORGE, THE PATRON SAINT OF ENGLAND, STARTING NEXT YEAR IN ORDER TO THANK THE LOYALTY OF ENGLISH TOURISM OVER THE YEARS

The scheduled activities, which will take place in parallel to those organised on the occasion of Book's Day, will foreseeably take place in Palmanova and Magaluf

The mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, has announced within the framework of the London World Travel Market tourism fair that the municipality of Calvià will celebrate Saint George, the patron saint of England, starting in 2024 in order to thank the loyalty of English tourists to the town over so many years.

The mayor informed the British Consul General, Lloyd Milen, about the initiative, who was grateful for the gesture, and indicated that possibly even the British ambassador to Spain, Hugh Elliott, could attend the celebration.

Although it is a tradition specific to England, the fact that it coincides with the activities organised annually in the municipality on the occasion of International Book's Day, on 23rd April, means that actions related to both commemorations will be carried out, such as the presence of British books and writers, as well as other complementary activities such as stands with English products and traditional British sports competitions.

The celebration is intended to be a unifying element that can be enjoyed by residents and visitors of all nationalities, just as the celebration of Saint Patrick (the patron saint of Ireland) in Santa Ponça has been for years. According to the mayor, the festival will function "as another element of tourist revitalisation and with a deseasonalising nature" in line with the municipal 365 strategy of organising events and actions in the different tourist areas of the municipality outside the high season.
